JEE Main vs JEE Advanced: The Fundamental Difference
JEE Main gets you into NITs, IIITs and CFTIs. JEE Advanced gets you into IITs. You must clear JEE Main first to appear for JEE Advanced — they are two separate exams with very different question styles.
Exam Pattern Differences
JEE Main has 90 multiple-choice questions (30 per subject) with straightforward application questions. JEE Advanced has multi-correct, integer type, and comprehension-based questions that test deeper conceptual understanding. The same chapter can have very different question styles in the two exams.
Which Should You Prepare For?
If you are in class 11 or early class 12, prepare for both simultaneously — the syllabus is identical. The difference is only in question style and depth. Regular mock tests for both exams will help you understand which type suits you better.
